more about me.

John Russell Stanger is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, couples, and families in Washington, DC and Kentucky. His approach to therapy is warm and collaborative. He enjoys creating a supportive environment for you to discover new possibilities for growth and transformation.

To his work as a therapist, he brings over a decade of experience working with adolescents outside the therapy room. He particularly enjoys helping adolescents with school, family, anxiety, depression, and identity issues.

He also incorporates his expertise in working with and advocating for LGBTQ people. Before training as a therapist, John Russell served as the Executive Director of an LGTBQ advocacy organization in New York, New York. He is particularly skilled at working with people desiring self-acceptance—especially when their religious tradition has made that a challenge. (While he is prepared to help clients incorporate their spirituality into therapy, this is done only at the request of the client.)

John Russell is also an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
